The way Bangladesh cricket has been progressing for the last few years, the day is not too far when Bangladesh will lift the coveted trophy of the ICC World Cup, a fact that former skipper Habibul Bashar Sumon like the mass people firmly believes.
Bangladesh made a stunning surge in one-day cricket whitewashing Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Afghanistan Ireland and Scotland. The Tigers also staged a significant progress in Test cricket. They won Tests against England and Sri Lanka following a win-like situation against New Zealand at Black Caps’ own backyard.
Habibul Bashar Sumon, who is now in selection panel of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), acknowledged this significant progress of the Bangladesh cricket, stating that the day is not too away when Bangladesh will clinch the coveted World Cup trophy.
“Our cricket has progressed a lot. Now we could give tough fight against any opponent and win matches. As a cricket nation, Bangladesh could have established themselves in the global cricket,” said Habibul Bashar.
“Whether we will achieve the target we set—the question could come to the fore, but the progress we have achieved since last few years, in that sense, I can say our future is obviously bright,” Bashar added.
“Now we’re hearing from all the fronts when Bangladesh will win World Cup. I can tell you all what I firmly believe that one day Bangladesh will win World Cup. If it’s not possible in the next World Cup, it will then be the subsequent World Cup. But I think, Bangladesh will triumph World Cup one day,” he remarked.
Bangladesh will next play a triangular series with the involvement of the Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Last time they had played the tri-nation series against the same teams in 2009.
“It’s a positive sign that Bangladesh will play a triangular series. Actually we wanted to see the condition of the Bangladesh team, who will play not only for taking part in the tournament but also play for winning the trophy. Probably we’re able to come on that stage. It’s a good feeling,” the selection panel member said.
“Last few years we have been playing for winning the trophies. In the next triangular series, there will have more pressure on us. This will be pressure of expectation and pressure of winning the tournament. But I think we will enjoy the pressure. This sort of situation we would always expect,” he added.
The best batsman in his time issued a warning, saying that they have to play their best cricket to win the tournament.
“It’s not easy to win any trophy,” he said, adding “You have to execute your plan against the team, whatever their ranking is.”
“You’ve to win the tournament by playing better cricket. I think, we’re almost prepared to win the tournament. But we’ve to play our best cricket if we want to win the tournament,” he concluded.
