Amu stresses on coal based industries for regional development

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu gave emphasise on expansion of coal and electricity based industries instead of natural gas for regional development.
He said it is not possible to connect Barisal with railway link in near future but Paira sea port will play an important role to boost socio-economic development of the region.  
The minister said this at a seminar on ‘economic and industrial prospects of Barisal division’ at Barisal Club Auditorium yesterday.
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Friedrich Naumann Foundation of Germany jointly organised the programme.
Abdul Matlub Ahmad, president FBCCI, presided over and the programme and Saidur Rahman Rintu, president of Barisal Chamber of Commerce and Industries, presented key notes on the topic.
The industries minister further said around 604 acres of land were already selected for creating special economic zone in Barisal and Bhola district. Ship-breaking industry would also be established at Taltali coast of Barguna.
Many of the state owned industries are now facing acute problems of natural gas supply as the resource is limited. Thus, it is not possible to expand more industry based on natural gas, said the minister.
However, a 250 MW electricity generation plant and a fertilizer factory would be established at Bhola by using natural gas, the minister added.
Amu urged the business people, industrialists to use vacant plots of Bangladesh Small and College Industries Corporation (BSCIC) estates. He assured women entrepreneurs in allotment of BSCIC plots.
If people of Barisal fail to avail the opportunities, then, people from other region will come forward to get those, the industry minister said.
The president of FBCCI narrated the prospects and possibilities of Barisal region and also said that pre-planned socio-economic development would create several employment opportunities for the people of the region.
Among others, the programme was addressed by Jebunnessa Afroj, MP, and Rebeka Sultana, leader of Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Barisal unit. and other leaders of the business community.
