Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) focuses more on Twenty20 cricket after the upliftment in Test and meteoric surge in one-day cricket so that they could fare well in this shorter format of games alongside give a tough fight against the biggest teams regardless of home and away condition.
The board believes that it's quite possible to develop in T20 cricket through their domestic T20 league. For this, they are thinking to arrange a Twenty20 tournament prior to the next edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as the BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said.
If they could start this T20 tournament they will be benefited from two ways. Firstly if they could start the tournament they will get some more quality local players for the BPL and that the competition in T20 tournament between local and foreign players will be increased.
Secondly, they could easily pick up and field the best possible players for their T20 international games what they are longing for a longer period.
“Many countries attempted to arrange T20 league but the bulk of them didn't succeed in their efforts. The level BPL lifted it's now just after IPL in term of popularity. Look at this edition, the star and big name players performed wherein they used to get feared to come here in the past. These marquee players would keep a vital role in BPL’s future tournaments,” said Nazmul Hassan.
“Along with that, if we could arrange a T20 tournament across the country prior to the BPL, we could be produced some more quality local players, it would be better for us. That thing we’ve kept in mind,” Nazmul said.
“Now we’ve to see our calendar. We’ve no option to do this to improve in T20. So, we’ll try our best to do it,” he added.
Nazmul also said that they have willingness to increase the number of the franchisee teams in BPL so that more local players could be come out of the T20 tournament.
But he hinted that the next edition of the Twenty20 tournament could be shortened due to the time constraint.
“Really we’ve willingness to increase the number of the franchisee team in BPL. But we’ve to think the gap what we’ve ahead between our international commitments for the next BPL. What we'd this year, I think, we’ll not get such gab in the next year. So, we might have shortened the next edition,” the BCB president said.
“But we’ve no planning to reduce the number of teams. We’re working on it so that we could keep all the seven teams in the next season if not possible to increase any new team. But if we get chance to increase another team, we’ll obviously do it,” he added.
Bangladesh will tour to Australia to play a full-package of bilateral series against the top-notch Aussies, the tour which will be played in between November and December in 2018.
So, the next edition of the blockbuster T20 tournament will not be held at the same period what it earlier implied by the BCB cricket operation committee chairman Akram Khan. BCB director and former skipper told that the BPL-6 will bring at least one and half-a-month ahead than the timeframe of the BPL-5 as the national team will be engaged in Australia in that moment.
