Candidates busy wooing voters

Mayoral and councilor candidates of different political parties in Rangpur City Corporation have busied themselves in wooing voters despite some aspirants are facing sluggish campaign due their internal conflicts. Major political parties — Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party — are preoccupied with poll campaign when the internal political feuds are overshadowing the campaign of the major ruling party. The ruling Awami League is facing the feuds much as the major local leaders and activists are electoral candidates for councilor posts. Due to internal division a large number of leaders and workers are avoiding the election campaign for their mayoral candidate Sharfuddin Ahamed Jhantu. But the candidates of other political parties including the BNP and Jatiya Party are facing relatively low internal conflicts, engaging themselves in campaigning for the mayoral and councilor posts.

Awami League Organizing Secretary Ahamed Hossain and Information and Research Affairs Secretary Afzal Hossain joined Rangpur electoral team of the party in favour of Sharfuddin Ahamed Jhantu.

A 15-member Jubo League, led by Imran

Hossain, is working with the city unit to boost up the morale of the local AL leaders and activists so that they invest their time and energy wholeheartedly for the party candidates.

Most interestingly the website of the regional election office was found empty, leaving electoral aspirants, voters and members of the media in the dark about election progress. When contacted Suvash Chandra Sarkar, regional election officer, said the website would be uploaded soon.

Asked about the absence of poor show-off in poll campaign the AL Rangpur city unit secretary Tusher Kanti Mondol said, “Poll campaigns don’t lack momentum rather a team of 71-member strong poll team is working round-the-clock.”

“We are seriously working for Jhantu and he will win with a big margin on AL ticket. Other mayoral candidates include Kawsar Zaman Babla of BNP, Mostafizur Rahaman of JP, Abdul Quddus of BSD, independent candidate Asif Mokbul Saharier, Salim Akhter of National People’s Party, and ATM Golam Mostofa of Islami Shashantantra Andolan. Two hundred eleven

candidates are vying for councilor posts and 65 female candidates are vying for women reserve seats.

Total voters in Rangpur City Corporation are three lakh eighty eight thousand four hundred twenty one. Of them, one lakh ninety six thousand six hundred fifty nine are male while one lakh ninety one thousand seven hundred sixty two are female.
