Feeding programme increases enrolment rate of students

Speakers at a function here yesterday said the school feeding programme (SFP) is playing significant role to increase the enrollment rate of the students in the schools and ensure quality education in project command areas, reports BSS. The SFP has also been able to reduce drop-out rate, and improve the learning capacity of students by alleviating short term hunger side by side with contributing to the remove of micronutrient deficiency of the children and ultra poor households, they said.

They came up with the comments while addressing a stakeholders’ workshop on school feeding programme at the conference room of SKS Inn at Radhakrishnopur of the town on Wednesday.

RDRS Bangladesh, a non government organization of the country, arranged the workshop with the financial support of United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) and United States of Department of Agriculture, said programme manager Porsia Rahman of RDRS Bangladesh.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the workshop as the chief guest and assistant project director of directorate of primary education Shamima Sultana and district primary education officer Aminul Islam Mondal and superintendent of primary training institute Shamsea Akter were present as special guests.

The workshop was also addressed, among others, by head of WFP, Rangpur Sub-office Hafiza Khan, programme associate Shahin Sultana, chairperson of school managing committee Abdul Mannan Mondal, head teacher Jahurul Islam, SKS representative Ashraful Alam, and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.

Earlier, project coordinator M. Enayetullah presented a power point on the programme and said RDRS Bangladesh is implementing the SFP at Sundarganj, Shaghata and Gobindaganj upazilas from 2006 and Fulchhari and Sadar upazilas from 2012.

A total of 1,72, 373 students including 88,885 female of 1273 schools of the upazilas are getting 75 gram of high energetic biscuits each at first period of school time except the holidays, he also said. DC Gautam Chandra Pal in his speeches said the project contributed to the implementation of the GOB’s education policy of universal primary education, notably by improving access to basic education of school aged children from poor and ultra poor households.
