In the wake of the current global disquiet over a US declaration, recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Bangladesh president Abdul Hamid rightly reiterated the position of his country in favour of a two-state solution for an acceptable ending to the protracted Israel-Palestine imbroglio. The president, speaking at the OIC Summit in Istanbul, correctly stated that the sudden announcement by the US administration to recognize Israel will only exacerbate the fraught situation that has plagued the middle-east region for about a century. It’s evident that the world, socially and politically, is passing through an extremely turbulent period with religious schisms, racial tensions plus blatant chauvinism fuelling unrest, suffering and displacement of millions.
At this point, what we expect is for the USA, arguably, one of the super powers of the world and an avowed advocate of human rights, to work as a mediator of political solutions that brings long-term animosity and conflict to an end. Unfortunately, it’s very clear to the lay person that this recent move over Jerusalem will only feed into more disenchantment, leading to widespread indignation and, eventually, more radical reactions.
Apart from global political complications, almost all countries now face the threat of militants driven to extreme acts by hate preachers who use arbitrary actions by western nations to indoctrinate young minds to lead them into abominable acts.
It’s universally agreed that the menace of extreme ideology needs to be countered not only by force but also by compassionate, considerate approach to complex political issues. However, the recent move by the US administration stands as a total contradiction, triggering vehement anti-American sentiment across the Muslim world. Understandably, such intense revulsion will only work as a breeding ground for extremists to vow to carry out more disruptions to life everywhere.
The Israel-Palestine contention is an old one with a solution only possible when both sides make some compromises and agree to a mutually respectable resolution like the two-state solution.
Appeasing one side will only take this problem into murkier waters, with the Muslim countries across the world feeling that the suffering of fellow Muslims in Palestine has been totally ignored. The long term ramification will see an isolated USA with her claim to be the champion of democracy severely tainted.
As proponents of harmonious co-existence, we feel that the two-state solution talks need to be rejuvenated with US playing the part of the honest broker. No impetuous decision can ever resolve the Palestine question – at least we have history to teach us that.
