OIC special summit on Jerusalem

President likely to address meet today

UNB

President Md Abdul Hamid reached Istanbul yesterday to attend the 6th Extraordinary Islamic Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), reports UNB. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the OIC special conference to discuss the repercussions of the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the president is expected to deliver his speech highlighting Bangladesh's position over the issue. Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Press Secretary to the president, who is also now in Istanbul, said that the president landed at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport at around 3:55 am local time on Tuesday. He was welcomed by Bangladesh Ambassador to Turkey M Allama Siddiki, he said. The president left the airport and now he has been staying at the Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus Hotel, the Deputy Press Secretary said. The Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States will hold an extraordinary meeting on the same morning to discuss the move in a unified and coordinated manner in the face of these developments affecting the occupied city of Al-Quds and its historical, legal and political status.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam will represent Bangladesh in the meeting, said a foreign ministry official.

Earlier, Donald Trump formally recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, breaking with decades of US policy and defying overwhelming global opposition.

Erdogan called upon the OIC members to come together to display joint actions and coordination among Muslim countries. US President Donald Trump's Jerusalem move triggered huge criticisms from the Turkish government and politicians.

Bangladesh has already expressed deep concern at the recent announcement by the United States recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and stressed preserving the legal status of Jerusalem within the framework of relevant UN resolutions.

Dhaka also urged all the parties concerned to take a pragmatic approach to the Middle East Peace Process in reaching a two-state solution for peace and stability in the region. Abdul Hamid is expected to return home on December 14, the deputy press secretary added.
