If you’re ingenious and have an innovative idea, no one can stop you. Delwar Hossain has proved it as much.

Instead of basking in the glory of completing a master’s degree, Delwar started a coaching centre and began a turkey farm earlier this year.

"I started my farm with just two turkeys that I had bought for Tk. 6,000. Now, my farm boasts over 200 turkeys with an estimated market value of around Tk. 7 lakh," he said.

Many people come to his farm daily to buy turkey meat, eggs and chicks.

Delwar said his capital has gone up to Tk. 7 lakh in the first year of his business. He has also started raising Titir birds or Francolins. He has so far spent about Tk. 2 lakh for this venture.

Inspired by his success, many have started their own turkey farms on a small scale with chicks from Delwar’s farm. A number of big turkey farms have been set up in various areas of Shailkupa.

Turkeys are more resilient than chicken and start laying eggs within six months. They can put up with both hot and cold weather. Turkeys lay over 230 eggs a year.

Each turkey weighs at least seven kg. A pair of turkeys fetch around Tk. 6,000.

Shailkupa upazila livestock officer Golam Mostofa said turkey farming has helped people become self-reliant.

"We have helped turkey farmers by providing them with necessary information about diseases that can affect turkeys and ways to prevent them," he added.
