Mayoral hopefuls pledge corruption-free city

Ahead of the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) polls on December 21, the mayoral candidates yesterday promised to work for better civic amenities, curb corruption, and set up a planned communication system. The commitments came at a face-to-face meeting between the mayoral candidates and voters organised by Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN) at Rangpur’s Public Library field. The interactive event was organised to bring the mayoral aspirants before the voters so that they can select an honest, eligible and dedicated person as the RCC chief. Five mayoral candidates out of seven were present on the occasion.

Each of the candidates began by delivering a short speech on what they wanted to do for the development of RCC and city residents. BNP candidate Kawsar Zaman said, “I would neither indulge in corruption nor allow others to do so. This is my commitment. This city has various problems like bad roads and traffic snarls. I will give priority to address these issues.”

He added: “If elected, I have plans to free the city from corruption and drugs. I will present a modern Rangpur city with better health care and educational facilities.”

Expressing doubts over fair polls, Jatiya Party candidate Mostafizur Rahman said, “The roles of the Election Commission and government are important for holding free and fair polls. I hope the government would stick to its role.”

Speaking about his priorities, Rahman emphasised better communication and drainage systems, easing traffic jams, freeing the footpaths, and the setting up of a separate hospital.

“The communication system in 18 wards is very fragile. I want to improve this. Besides, I want to work on digging a big canal for a better drainage system. I would talk to traders to free the footpaths for the people,” he added.
