A late strike from Mohammed Abdullah salvaged the title contenders Chittagong Abahani Limited with a solitary goal win over Rahamatganj MFS in the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League football yesterday.
Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the day’s first match, Chittagong Abahani after their struggling victory retained the solo lead in the points table with 39 from 16 matches closely followed by the defending champions Abahani Limited.
In their first leg meet Chittagong Abahani won the match by 2-0 but the Old Dhaka outfit Rahmatganj did not give so much trouble, as they throw huge challenge specially, their defenders dealt successfully with the strong attacks.
Chittagong Abahani Limited to get back to their winning ways demonstrated better performance to keep the possession under their control for maximum time in the 90 minutes time and also did everything to have a goal but had to wait for more than 70 minutes, as most of the time they were not impressive just in front of the goal mouth.
At least three scoring opportunities were wasted when Zahid Hossain, Lionel Saint and Towhidul Alam Sabuj could not break the deadlock, as their efforts were denied by keeper or shattered by the side post.
Specially, captain Zahid’s free kick hit the side post on 34th minute followed by a Sabuj close range shot well gripped by the goalkeeper.
After the goalless first half, the Chittagong giants kept their pace to have the coveted goal and put Rahmatganj under tremendous pressure to open space but again the cross piece denied the real scoring chance on 70th minute.
Lionex, who could not find the net in the first half from his couple of attempts, after edging past three of his markers outside the box and powered a left footer which saw the ball went out hitting the cross piece.
But three minutes later Abdullah came to rescue the title aspirants when the youngster marked the target from a 25 yards long free kick, which went into net after hitting the side post (1-0).
Abdullah after scoring the spectacular goal made an unbelievable blunder when he took a sky-high shot just from few yards from the goal-line, rather than to push the ball into open net on 89th.
