On December 2, the Yao people from China’s Yunnan, Guangxi and Hainan, together with those from the United States, Thailand and Laos celebrate the annual Panwang Festival in Mengla County, south Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna.
The festival was held to commemorate the Yao people’s earliest ancestor: Panwang. It has been celebrated for more than 1,700 years.
In Mengla, the Panwang Festival was held in every township where the Yao people dwell in the past years. This year, the festival was first held in the government seat of the county, and representatives from other Chinese provinces and foreign countries are invited.
During this year’s festival, besides performances of folk songs and dances, a commodity fair was also held.
