‘BCL ATTACK’ ON STUDENTS

Institute of Health Technology closed for indefinite period

Rajshahi: Institute of Health Technology (IHT) Rajshahi has been declared closed after five female students were injured in an attack allegedly by members of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), reports UNB.

The BCL men attacked the students when they went to the principal's room for lodging complaint against extortion and harassment by BCL activists.

The authorities closed the institute for an indefinite period yesterday following the attack.

All male students were asked to leave the dormitories by 1 pm while the female ones by 3 pm, said IHT principal Dr Sirazul Islam.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of academic council to fend off any unwanted situation, he said.

The attack left five students - Rupa, 19, Naznin Aktar, 18, of Pharmacy Department, Nishat Mohona, Afrin Sharmin and Bristy, 18, of Laboratory Department injured.

Some students in the morning submitted a memorandum to the principal demanding punishment of the BCL leaders who allegedly harassed students and extort money from them.
