Meghodeepa to perform at Chhayanaut tomorrow

Indira Gandhi Culture Centre is organising an evening of Hindustani classical vocal music by Meghodeepa Gangopadhaya from Kolkata at Chhayanaut Auditorium, Dhanmondi in the capital tomorrow.

Born in a musical family of Kolkata, Meghodeepa Gangopadhyay started learning music at a tender age from her mother Smt Indrani Ganguli and later on from Smt. Geetashree Bhattacharya. Thereafter, since 1997 she has been taking training at Shrutinandan, one of the most prestigious institutions of Indian Classical Vocal Music founded by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty in Kolkata, where she took guidance from Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty under Guru-Shishya parampara. She has also been taking taleem from Smt. Kaushiki Chakraborty for the last twelve years.

 Her first solo performance was at a classical music concert organised by the Dover Lane Music Conference in August 2010. She performed at ‘Rhythm Club’, an annual event organized by the accomplished Tabla artist Pt. Subhankar Banerjee in 2011. Apart from these solo recitals in Kolkata, Meghodeepa has also performed in almost all the major cities of India with Smt. Kaushiki Chakraborty. Her musical journey has taken her to most of the major cities in the USA, Washington DC, Houston, San Jose, Raleigh, Orlando, Detroit, Chicago and Boston, and to many other countries such as Canada, Germany, Dubai, Muscat, Kenya, Kuwait, Nepal and Indonesia.

 In 2010, Meghodeepa was awarded the first prize for Khayal in an all India competition organized by the Dover Lane Music Conference in Kolkata. She stood second in the category of Khayal in an all India music competition organized by Murari Smriti Sangeet Sammelan in 2011.

 Apart from Hindustani classical music, Meghodeepa was a part of Raagas & Blossoms, a highly acclaimed experimental classical music concert conceptualized and directed by Smt. Kaushiki Chakraborty. Meghodeepa has sung for eminent music director Shantanu Moitra in MTV Coke Studio Season 2. She had the privilege of working with the eminent film director Rituparna Ghosh in his last film ‘Jeevansmriti’.

Apart from music, Meghodeepa has graduated in Sociology from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and achieved First Class First in her post-graduation from the University of Calcutta. Currently, she is associated with the MIT Pune Vishwashanti Gurukul as a visiting lecturer.
