Country’s second tea auction centre is going to be launched at Sreemangal tomorrow. Moulvibazar district administration and Tea Planters & Traders Association of Bangladesh will jointly arrange the launching ceremony, reports BSS.
On September 12, Commerce Ministry in a meeting with tea board, tea traders and brokers’ association decided to set up the auction centre.
Additional secretary Abdur Rouf recently handed the approval letter to the acting deputy commissioner of Moulvibazar Ashrafur Rahman and Tea Planters and Traders Association, an official of Bangladesh Tea Board said.
Sylhet region has 137 out of the country’s total 162 tea gardens. Of them, there are 20 tea gardens in Sylhet, 93 in Moulvibazar and 22 in Habiganj districts.
An official of Bangladesh Tea Board said seven crore, out of the country’s total annual output 8.5 crore kilograms of tea, are produced in the region. Around 3.5 lakh workers are engaged in the tea estates. Of them, 75 per cent are female workers.
