Navy new sailors' passing out parade held

The colorful passing out parade marking the induction of B/2017 batch of 775 new entry sailors of Bangladesh Navy was held on Monday at BNS Titumir parade ground in Khulna city’s Khalishpur area.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed reviewed the smartly turned out parade and took salute at the impressive march past as the chief guest. Later, he handed over prizes among the best performers.

New sailor Sheikh Muhammad Rasel secured 'Naval Chief Award' for his best all round performance among 775 sailors while Md Hossain 'Kamkhul Award' for achieving second position and Md Mahmudul Hasan got 'Titumir Award' for third position during the professional training.

360 Liberation War memorial museums soon

The government is set to construct 360 Liberation War Memorial museums at the historical sites of 1971 War of Liberation aimed at imbuing the new generation with its spirit.

"We are going to start construction of 360 Liberation War museums across the country as part of the initiative of preserving the historical sites of the great-war, as the project has already been okayed," Assistant Chief Md Mominur Rahman of Ministry of Liberation War Affairs told the news agency yesterday.

The government has taken the project involving around Tk 200 crore to preserve 360 historical places of the Liberation War aimed at helping the new generation know the glory and facts of the 1971 War of Liberation.

2 ‘drug peddlers’ held in Ctg

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested two alleged drug peddlers along with 1,400 bottles of Phensedyl from Boro Darogarhat area in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong on Monday night.

The arrestees were identified as Md Nur Alam, 50, son of late Edrish Ali of Katalia village of Feni district and Md Mehedi Hasan Bappy, 19, son of Md Kabir Hossain of Jorarganj thana of Chittagong district.

Mimtanur Rahman, senior assistant director (Media) of RAB-7, said on secret information a team of elite force conducted a drive in the area around 11pm and arrested them along with 1,400 bottles of Phensedyl. The elite force also seized a truck.

Awareness programme held

An initiative was taken at an RMG factory in Rajendrapur to raise awareness on personal safety and employee rights of female workers by Zonta Club of greater Dhaka on Monday.

Led by the Club’s president and general secretary, they visited a factory and got to know about its existing policies regarding workers’ safety measures and their work environment. Sonia Panni, president of the Club and Dr Zerin Karim, its general secretary, then went on to enlighten the workers about their rights and how they can exercise those.

Tehmina Enayet, a fellow Zontian, along with Sayeda Rokhsana, Sharmin Rifat and Nasrin Rab, also spoke on the occasion.

Discussion on ‘World Soil Day’ held in Rajishahi

Scientists and researchers in Rajshahi at a post-rally discussion yesterday stressed the need for protecting soil health for upholding crop production to ensure food security of the country.

They viewed that the soil productivity has gradually been declining due to indiscriminate using of chemical fertilisers and pesticides round the year.

On the contrary, they said using organic fertiliser could be the effective means of protecting the soil health.

Regional office of Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI) organised the discussion at its office conference hall to mark the World Soil Day-2017.  ‘Caring for the Planet Starts from the Ground’ was the main theme of the day.
