Views exchange on Inidas river interlinking project tomorrow

UNB

The International Farakka Committee is going to arrange an all-party views exchange in the city over India’s river interlinking project that poses an environment disaster for lower riparian Bangladesh, reports UNB.
The views exchange will be held at Jatiya Press Club on Sunday. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, former caretaker government adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein, former state minister for foreign affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury, former Dhaka University vice-chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, writer Farhad Mazhar, water expert Inamul Haque, among others, will be present.
Chairman of IFC New York Atiqur Rahman Salu will preside over the function, while IFC coordinator and Greenwa-tch Editor Mostafa Kamal Majumder will moderate it.
India has recently announced to implement the controversial river interlinking project that will connect 30 major rivers including the trans-boundary Brahmaputra and Ganges to divert water to western and southern Indian states for irrigation.
Environmentalists and experts worldwide protested the move, saying that if the project is implemented, it will diminish the waterflow in Bangladesh’s rivers like the Teesta, Jamuna and Padma and affect the country’s environment and economy.
