SAARC exhibition, cultural festival underway at Shilpakala

A four-day SAARC exhibition, workshop on handicrafts and SAARC cultural festival on traditional dance is underway on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital.

The festival kicked off in the field of BSA on Thursday evening. Presided over by Director General of BSA Liaquat Ali Lucky, Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Ibraheem Hosein Khan was present as the chief guest and director of the SAARC Cultural Centre Wasanthe Kotuwella was present as special guest at the opening ceremony.

The cultural segment of the festival began with a special presentation titled ‘Bandan’ featuring the songs of eight countries at the Nandan Mancha of the academy. Artistes from the SAARC countries rendered the chorus songs of the respective countries.

Besides, under the direction of eminent Bangladeshi dance artiste Shamim Ara Nipa, several artistes, including Shibli Mohammad and Nipa herself, performed a group dance titled ‘Jonmobhubi’.

The four-day event also features cultural programme and dance performances by the artistes of India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives including Bangladesh.

The handicrafts from Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka are being exhibited at the National Art Gallery of BSA.

Besides, two workshops on Handicraft, conducted by artist Kamruzzaman and traditional dance workshop, conducted by renowned dancer Tamanna Rahman, were held at gallery-4 of the Jatiya Chitrashala (National Art Plaza) and seminar hall of Jatiya Natyashala (National Theatre Hall) respectively.

A total of 22 participants participated in handicrafts workshop while 17 participated in that of traditional dance.

The participants in workshop on handicrafts are--Sonam (Bhutan), Damber Kumari Baraily (Bhutan), Abdulla Mohamed (Maldives), Suneetha Mohamed (Maldives), Hawwa Zahir (Maldives), Ahsam Fareed (Maldives), Assad Amir (Maldives), Indika Udayanga (Sri Lanka), M.A. Maduka Dilhani (Sri Lanka), Ranuka Prasad Wijesinghe (Sri Lanka), Sree Sanjoi Kumar Pal (Bangladesh), Hosne Ara (Bangladesh), Sree Getesh Chandra Das (Bangladesh), Birandra Chandra Sutradhar (Bangladesh), Md. Manik Sarker (Bangladesh), Md. Anower Hossain (Bangladesh), Sree Sanker Malakar (Bangladesh), Abdul Awal Molla (Bangladesh), Shajahan Miah (Bangladesh), Namita Chakrabarti (Bangladesh), Yamin Khan (Bangladesh), Moniruzzaman (Bangladesh).

The participants in traditional dance workshop are--Ranjit Kumar Gogoi (India), Mususumi Borah (India), Pranjit Saikia (India), Nivarani Baruah (India), Kunzang Thienly (Bhutan), Pema Samdrup (Bhutan), Sangay Wangmo (Bhutan), Tandin (Bhutan), Sherab Tharchen (Bhutan), Kinzang Gyeltshen (Bhutan), Kariyawasam Madakakada gamage Jayantha (Sri Lanka), Palaweni Arachchige Dilshan Kanisha Perera (Sri Lanka), Wirasingha Mushiyanselage Danishka Chathil (Sri Lanka), Kahawela Mudiyanselage Wsantha Madhuranga (Sri Lanka), Muthugal Pedige Thushan Lakshitha Rajathissa (Sri Lanka), Konage Koralalage Lahiru Sawan Chanuka Bandara (Sri Lanka), Migel Perera Matharn Mahawidhanage Sajitha (Sri Lanka).

The closing ceremony of the event will be held at the National Theatre Hall of BSA tomorrow at 5.30 pm with a colourful cultural programme.

To note, aiming to promote the culture and heritage of the SAARC countries, BSA, in association with the Cultural Ministry of Bangladesh and SAARC Cultural Centre, Sri Lanka, has organised the event.
