Comilla aim to carry on BPL winning spree

The fourth and last phase of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will open with the match of the leaders Comilla Victorians and rejuvenated Rangpur Riders at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur at 1:00pm today. Though Comilla and Rangpur both played one match less than the other BPL teams, the 2015 BPL champion team as the first BPL team booked their berth in the knockout stage with outstanding performance. They played nine-match road string, whereby they clinched the highest number of wins so far. Their BPL campaign geared up more than the initial period after the advent of their Pakistan recruitments especially all-rounder Sohaib Malik and paceman Hasan Ali.

Rangpur Riders on the other hand rejuvenated like Comilla after the arrival of their marquee T20 players-Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum. Now they are languishing at fourth place with eight points what they racked up nine outings.

The title-aspirants team has remained three matches, from where they needed to win at least one match for the qualifying the knockout phase. They brought two new players from Sri Lanka to fill the shoes of the Lasith Malinga and Thisara Perera, who left Bangladesh for India to join the Sri Lankan tent ahead of their one-day series against India. The newly-recruited Estru Udara and Chamara Kapugedera meanwhile arrived in Dhaka to play BPL for the Riders.

Comilla and Rangpur both held their pre-match day training session to hone their skills and techniques to bring the result of the match in their favour.

Even though the table-toppers are now in comfortable zone, they want to maintain their winning runs what they scripted throughout the tournament to consolidate the position on the points table.

Comilla Victorians head coach Mohammad Salahuddin said that they seek to continue their winning streak to cement the position on the points table though they already qualified for the knockout phase.

“Every match in the tournament is very important though they confirmed the top-four clash because the momentum of a team can be lost at any time,” said Mohammad Salahuddin.

“We emphasised on our next matches like the past matches owing to their importance because it would be worse thing if we lose the match. We want to improve in every match,” Salahuddin told.

“We had also some mistakes in the last match. We should have scored more runs. If I talked about the bowlers then I will say they really bowled well especially local bowlers. For them, the pressure on foreign players had reduced,” he added.

Riders wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Mithun also iterated to keep continuation of their winning note what they grabbed in the last some matches especially in Chittagong phase.

“Look, we could not but win any of our matches easily. All the matches we had to win by fighting. As we won the matches by tough fight we have efforts enough inside us. Inshaallah, we will fight in the next matches in that vein,” Mohammad Mithun said.
