Bangladesh karatekas made a sensation when they became champions in the Second International Sato Karate-Do-Championship held in Indian Punjab state from November 24 to 26. The team returned home on Wednesday. Bangladesh won as many as 25 out of 29 gold medals decided in the three day meet. Apart from 25 golds, the team also won 10 silver medals, said Sheikh Ali Ahsan Badal, general secretary of Bangladesh Karate Federation (BKF), yesterday.
The BKF had sent a 23-member team and they toppled all other participating nations including India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. He however, admitted that the best karatekas of India did not take part in the championship. India had fielded three different teams.
Five Bangladeshi karatekas won two gold medals each. They are Sajjad, Noor Hossain, Sanwar Akhter Bulbuli, Zannatul Noor Jitu and Karima Khatun. The BKF secretary did not disclose the names of other gold medals winners. He said this is the best possible result in any international meet.
“You should know that Bangladesh topped the medal table in the karate in the South Asian Games in Dhaka in 2012 winning four gold medals. This time all of them have been kept out of the national team.”
