PM reiterates call to int’l community, UN

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday reiterated her call to the international community, including the United Nations, to maintain the pressure on the Myanmar government for taking back their nationals from Bangladesh, reports UNB. She made the call when Under Secretary of the UN Fekitamoeloa Katoa Utoikamanu met her at her office.

PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting. "Keep up the pressure on Myanmar to take back their nationals," he quoted the Prime Minister as saying. Ihsanul Karim also said the Prime Minister mentioned about the sufferings of the local people due to the influx of Rohingyas from Myanmar. She put emphasis on full implementation of the Kofi Anan report.

Sheikh Hasina said the local people in Cox’s Bazar district are in trouble with Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh following the atrocities carried out by Myanmar government forces on them. The Prime Minister said Bangladesh has already faced prolonged flood hitting the country hard. “And on top of it, the Rohingya crisis has become an additional burden on Bangladesh.”

About Bangladesh’s journey towards being a middle-income country, Sheikh Hasina said the government has already adopted Vision 2021 and formulated five year plans accordingly. She mentioned that poverty reduction, rural development and women empowerment are on top of the list of the government’s prime tasks.

Briefly describing the government’s various efforts for the country’s overall development, she said the GDP has reached 7.28 while the per capita income now stood at US$ 1610.

Talking about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Prime Minister said that Bangladesh has achieved the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in due time and will surely attain the SDGs.

She also mentioned that the government has given importance to the research works for inventing various crops to face the adverse impact of the climate change.  Katoa Utoikamanu highly appreciated Bangladesh’s development in various sectors and said the UN is carrying out a review to continue its assistance for Bangladesh despite the country is steady graduation to a middle-income country from an LDC. She mentioned that the graduation of a country from an LDC to a middle-income one is a success of the UN efforts.

The UN Under Secretary said assistance cannot be stopped if a country is graduated to a middle-income one from the LDC saying the UN’s step should not be like punishment.

Utoikamanu saidit is now revisiting rules and laws about how to provide the assistance to every individual country even after graduation to a middle-income country.
