Indigenous man to die for killing four in Joypurhat

Joypurhat: A court here yesterday sentenced an indigenous man to death for killing four people, including his son and mother-in-law in Panchbibi upazila in 2015, reports UNB.

The condemned convict is Sumon Hemron.

On June 21, 2015, in a fit of anger over the alleged extramarital affairs of his wife, Sumon Hemron hacked his own son, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and uncle-in-law to death at Bhimpur-Alapara in Panchbibi upazila.

After examining the records and witnesses, Joypurhat District and Sessions Judge Momtaj Parvin handed down the verdict.

2 arrested with 10 gold bars

Customs intelligence officials arrested two people along with 10 gold bars, weighing one kilogram, from Benapole check-post area here yesterday.

The arrestees were identified as Mohsin Khan, 36, son of Jahangir Hossain Khan of Shariatpur and Elius Ahmed, 40, son of Ibrahim Ahmed of Faridpur district.

Tipped-off, a team of Benapole customs intelligence conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo around 11:30 am, said Sadek Hossain, deputy director of Benapole Customs Intelligence.

Later, they searched their bodies and recovered 10 gold bars.

The detainees were handed over to the Benapole Port Police Station.

Retired teacher found dead

Kushtia: Police recovered a body of a retired schoolteacher from a water body at Putia village in Kumarkhali upazila yesterday morning, four days after he went missing, reports UNB.

Abdul Khalek, officer-in-charge of Kumarkhali Police Station, said, Abdul Jabbar, 70, former teacher of JN High School of Kumarkhali and son of late Ramjan Ali of the village, went missing on Saturday after he went out from his home.

Locals spotted the floating body in a water body at Putia village and informed family members and police.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC adding that family members, earlier, filed a general diary.

One killed in Narail clash

over fish hatchery ownership

Narail: A man was killed and eight others were injured as two groups clashed over the ownership of a government fish hatchery at Tapanbagh village of Sheikhhati union in Narail yesterday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman.

Locals said a villager Golam Rasul along with his group went for fishing in the hatchery demanding its ownership around 5:00 am.

The clash ensued as the lessee of the hatchery, Mahfuzur Rahman’s guards opposed them, leaving Abdur Rahman critically injured. He was rushed to Jessore Medical College and later he succumbed to his injuries. One was held in the connection, said officer-in-charge (Operation) of Narail Sadar Police Station Md Amanullah Al Bari.

Arms, ammos seized

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two arms traders along with firearms and ammunitions from Nasirabad college area at Akua in the district town on Tuesday midnight.

The detainees are identified as Sohel and Arman.

Rab-7 operation officer Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gautom said based on secret information a special team of Rab carried out a raid at a house in the area and detained the duo.

Later, the elite force recovered seven pistols, seven rounds of bullets and arms making materials from the house.

An organised gang had long been making firearms at the house and selling those in local market, the ASP added.

Details in this regard will be disclosed at a press conference to be held later in the day.
