UNB

Two alleged criminals were killed in separate shootouts with law enforcers in Gazipur and Tangail yesterday. In Gazipur, a listed criminal was killed in what law enforcers termed shootout between his cohorts and members of Detective Branch (DB) of police at Salna in sadar upazila early yesterday, reports UNB from Gazipur. The deceased was identified as Saidul Islam,35, a former president of Shimultala union unit Juba League under Badda 97 number ward and son of Jaimat Ali of Dakkhin Badda area in the capital. Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge of DB police, said police arrested Saidul, an alleged criminal from Gazipur area on Thursday. Following his confessional statement, DB police took him to Salna area to arrest his associates and recover firearms around 12am yesterday. Sensing the presence of the DB police, the associates of Saidul opened fire to police,
prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, Saidul was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries. Other associates of Saidul managed to flee the scene. Later Saidul was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 12:25 am. Two DB constables—Yeamin and Ujjal Mia—were slightly injured during the gunfight. Police recovered a pistol and two rounds of bullet from the scene.
Saidul was wanted in several cases filed with Badda Police Station and Gazipur Sadar Police Station, said Gazipur superintendent of police Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid. However, family members claimed that DB members picked up Saidul from Salna area while he was going to his poultry farm in Gazipur on Wednesday night and killed him in ‘gunfight’.
Meanwhile, in Tangail, a regional commander of outlawed Purba Bangla Communist Party (ML) was killed in a gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Shymar Ghat of Tangail Sadar Upazila yesterday, RAB and police said.
Commander of RAB-12 Additional Police Super Mohiuddin Faruki confirmed the news saying, “The deceased was identified as Mojibur Rahman Sheke, 40, an accused in 18 criminal cases including murder, terrorism and extortion cases.”
The encounter took place in Shymar Ghat area as the RAB members went there hearing gun-fighting between two local rival extremist groups, he said. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, they opened fire targeting them. The RAB members retaliated by firing. At one stage, both the agitating groups fled the scene. Later, RAB found the blood-stained body of Sheke. One pistol, two bullets and one magazine were also recovered from the spot. The body was sent to Tangail Medical College Hospital morgue. A case was filed with concerned police station in this connection.
