Shailkupa Upazila Bus–Minibus Owners Association (BMOA) and Transport Workers Unity (TWU) jointly called transport strike for an indefinite period from yesterday protesting the plying of three-wheelers and shallow-engine driven light vehicles on Jhenidah-Shailkupa-Hatfazilpur road.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the two organisations on
August 20.
Joint secretary of Jhenidah BMOA Alamgir Kabir said non-stop plying of three-wheelers and the light vehicles like Nocimon, Karimon, Alamshadu, Grambangla, Votvoti and Allargari on Jhenidah-Shailkupa-Hatfazilpur road is continuing despite a ban on their movement.
The local administration has not taken any step to stop them.
Over 3.5 lakh people of the upazila have been suffering due to the strike.
The protesters said when government has taken strong action against them, then why the illegal vehicles are plying on the road under the nose of the local administration.
According to the BMOA sources, over 10 local bus services and 3 Dhaka-Shailkupa bus services operate everyday from Shailkupa upazila.
