A suspected mugger was hit by bullet and injured during a ‘gunfight’ between his associates and police at Krishnanagar area in Kaliganj upazila early yesterday.
Police also recovered a pipe-gun, two crude bombs and a machete from the spot.
The injured mugger has been identified as Shaheen Sarder, of Laxminath village in the upazila.
Subhash Biswas, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj police station, said a group of muggers intercepted Nirmal Ghosh of Krishnagar village and snatched Tk 6 lakh from his possession at gunpoint when he reached Chatrar intersection around 2 pm on Thursday.
On information, police rushed in and chased the muggers and caught Shaheen along with Tk 4.79 lakh while the others managed to flee the scene. According to his 'confessional' statement, police along with Shaheen conducted a drive at a Krishnagar hideout to arrest his associates at around 1:35 am.
Sensing the presence of police, the muggers hurled bombs at the police, forcing them to fire back. And Shaheen got injured in the gunfight. He was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital under police custody.
