The Aman cultivators at Majbari and adjacent villages in Sharikandi upazila of Bogra have been facing irrigation crisis since last July for the lack of electricity.
ASM Mostafizur Rahman, Assistant General Manager (AGM) Palli Bidyut Samity, Shariakandi admitted it over cell phone and said at least 15 transformers were stolen from several irrigation projects of the upazila during last two months.
“According to the law subscriber have to buy transformer spending their own money and samity will provide required power for irrigation project, for this reasons samity will not be able to provide any transformer at the stage” said ASM Mostafizur Rahman.
Locals complained that more than 1000 bighs of Aman paddy now becoming damage in several villages including Majbari and Nayapara for necessary irrigation.
According to local people, usually on an average 20 maunds of Aman paddy is produced from per bigha in the area.
Chani Das Kundu, Deputy Director, Agriculture Extension (AED) Department in Bogra said the department is trying to solve the problems but Palli Bidyut Samity is yet to arrange any transformer. Farmer Moklasur Rahman of Majbari village in the upazila said he cultivated paddy on seven bigha of landspending Tk 50,000 aiming to produce 140 maund s of paddy.
“ Situation indicates it is quite impossible to produce half of the target ” said Mukhlesur Rahman. Another farmer Aizer Parmanik said he cultivated paddy on four bighas spending Tk 9,000 but he is apprehending that total investment is likely to be spoiled for irrigation crisis. Local people roughly estimated that farmers of villages have to count at least Tk 5 crore as production loss.
