Prime Minister's Energy Advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on Saturday said Bangladesh has no obligation for talking mitigation measures while dealing with climate change issues, reports UNB. “We're just producing only 0.4 metric tons (mt) of carbon per annum while a developed country is producing 20 mt per annum. Their responsibility is just 40 times more than ours,” he told a concluding session of the Sector Leaders' Workshop at Biduyt Bhaban in the capital. He, however, said Bangladesh can do something in the adaptation part of the climate change issue.
With energy secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury in the chair, the function was also addressed by State Minister for Power ands Energy Nasrul Hamid, parliamentary standing committee chairman on power and energy ministry Tajul Islam and Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus.
The energy advisor said the power and energy sector's main objective is not dealing with the climate change. Rather, the solution of power and energy problem has been the main target, he said.
Nasrul Hamid said that the government has set a target to generate 24,000 MW of electricity by 2021.
“But we have to work keeping a target of generating 30,000 MW to achieve the goal,” he said adding that presently the country's power generation is about 9500-10,000 MW. He directed the officials to get prepared to take the challenge of implementing huge power generation projects.
