At least 14 girls of Durgapasa High school in Bakerganj upazila admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital after fell sick in an incidence of mass hysteria yesterday afternoon.
Shila Sarkar, teacher of Durgapasa High school, said the girls were attending classes normally in the morning. Suddenly Akhi Aktar and Mousumi Jahan of class VI fell sick and became unconscious after convulsion and vomiting.
Then the sickness spread among other girls, who saw the two girls becoming ill, at the school premises at about 11:30 am, she said.
Among the victims, Arpita, Chadni, Urrmi, Rupa, Mousumi, Akhi with others eight were sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).
Dr Abul Al Mamun, duty doctor at the SBMCH, said the girls became sick with symptoms of convulsion and vomiting.
It may have caused by food poisoning or from physical weakness, psychological pressure, fluctuation of blood pressure and mental affects created after seeing others falling sickness.
The condition of the patients is now stable and cause of sickness could be determined after clinical test, hospital sources said.
