People to reject BNP in polls for its ‘misdeeds’: PM

Blasting BNP for its various 'misdeeds', Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said people will not cast their vote for the party to see the resurgence of unrest, reports UNB. "At least the country's people will no longer cast their vote in favour of BNP and they can't as they don't want to see the resurgence of unrest," she said in her winding-up speech of the 18th session of 10th parliament. In her 32-minute speech, the Leader of the House said as long as Awami League remains in power, her government will continue to ensure development and welfare of the country's people so that Bangladesh could be built in light with the Liberation War spirit.

She said people now realise that the country sees massive development when AL is in power and this development will continue. "We've improved the lifestyle of common people and taken Bangladesh to a dignified position."

Taking a swipe at the BNP-Jamaat clique for unleashing attacks on AL men, including herself, firing openly and resorting to bomb blasts, during their tenure, Sheikh Hasina alleged that the BNP men had killed Ahsanullah Master, MP, Shah AMS Kibria, Ivy Rahman and many more. "Even they were also involved in the 10-truck arms haul incident."

"Why will people vote for those who have such virtues? How do they dream of going to power again? BNP became champions in corruption for five times and they played with the fate of people," she said.

The Prime Minister apprehended that if BNP returns to power, they will make the lives of common people miserable. "I've faith in people. At least those who have conscience will never cast their vote for BNP. So, dreaming of returning to power or talking tall talks won't work. People want peace and development."

Referring to the Opposition Leader's concern about 'enforced disappearance', she said there is no doubt that it is the duty of the government to ensure the security of common people. Sheikh Hasina mentioned that many people are allegedly being disappeared and many of them also return. "But, the news items of those who return don't get the due coverage."

Citing an estimate of 2009, she said some 275,000 British citizens went missing and 20,000 of them remained untraced. "The situation is even worse in the United States."

She said such incidents could take place in a country like Bangladesh having a population of over 16 crore. In an oblique reference to Farhad Mazhar, Hasina said an allegation was then raised that that man was disappeared, but he was found wondering at the New Market in Khulna. Responding to the opposition leader's concern over the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and Rampal coal-based power Plant, the Prime Minister said an agreement has already been signed with Russia under which they will take back the nuclear wastes and there is nothing to worry over that.

She noted that the coal-based power plant also exist in cities and towns of Germany, saying, "Had there been any risk or possibility of causing harm to the environment, we wouldn't have moved ahead with the Rampal Plant. By the grace of Almighty Allah, there'll be no harm."
