The High Court on Thursday imposed a ban on filling up of Kajla Beel area in Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj district, reports UNB. It also fixed Nov 28 to hear a previous HC rule in this regard. The HC bench of Justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order yesterday afternoon.
Earlier on October 24, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in two weeks why their inaction to protect the lands, ponds and canals in Kajla Beel area should not be declared illegal.
Already 700 acres of cropland of local Land office has been filled up in the name of Rimjhim Police Town and Italian City Housing Project damaging the environment in the area, advocate Taimur Alam Khandker who, appeared for the petitioners, said. The HC issued the rule after a writ petition was filed by four locals, including Badsha Mia, following a report recently published in a national daily, he said.
