The leaders of labour organisations yesterday demanded a decent salary for the garments workers, who are the major contributors to the country’s economy, reports UNB. They also urged the authorities concerned to increase the basic salary of the workers so that they can lead a decent life and at the same time save some money for their future. They came up with the demand at a round table discussion organised by IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) at capital’s CIRDAP auditorium.
“Only 0.40 per cent of the garments workers can save some money while 99.60 per cent have no savings,” said Bangladesh Textile Garment Worker League president ZM Kamal Anam while presenting a survey report conducted by IBC.
The survey also showed that around 64 per cent workers could not meet up their necessary needs while 77.2 per cent have to do overtime duty to fulfill their demands.
IBC conducted the survey among 850 garments workers in Dhaka, Gazipur, Ashulia-Savar, Narayanganj and Chittagong in 2016.
He said workers in Bangladesh get lesser wages than the neighbouring countries like India, and Cambodia. “Bangladeshi workers get $67 while workers in India and Cambodia get $168 and $170 respectively.”
He also said the minimum salary for a sweeper on government pay scale is 15,250 while the minimum salary of a garment worker is 5,300 and only 13 per cent of the garments workers enjoy their holiday.
