There is no denying the fact that the identity of a state or a nation is greatly determined by its past history, education, culture, tradition and heritage. There is no dearth of historical monuments, archeological and heritage sites in our country. The historic Ahsan Manzil in Dhaka, Star Mosque, Armenian Church, Lalbag Fort, the once impressive buildings in Sonargaon of Narayanganj district, the Buddha Bihar in Mainamati of Comilla district, the Shat Gambuj Mosque in Bagerhat district, the Oxford Mission Church in Barisal district deserve special mention. Those have been soothing the eyes of the onlookers from generation to generation.
A two-daylong workshop under the KOICA supported two-year long Conservation with Advanced Technique for Cultural Heritage Project (CATCH Project) ended on Wednesday at Bangladesh National Museum (BNM) in the capital. Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman, giving thanks to the Korean government and KOICA for this wonderful and meaningful project hoped that the project will create a new horizon for Bangladesh in terms of heritage conservation related activities.
The conditions of many of the historical monuments and heritage buildings in different districts of the country are pitiable due to absence of repair and renovation. There are some tottering buildings in different places of the country including the capital Dhaka. It is the responsibility of the relevant ministry and the department to take care of the dilapidated heritage buildings. Since we cannot ignore our golden past we cannot also neglect these monuments. Scores of foreign tourists visit our country every year. They can have a glimpse over these monuments.
We have the longest sea beach in the world. The vast and vibrant Inani sea beach and Moheshkhali sea beach attract scores of local and foreign tourists every year. Natural tourism can contribute immensely to the national economy if necessary steps are taken in this regard. The ancient temples and monasteries that can be the subject of cultural tourism should be renovated to attract tourists. Protection of those from decay and destruction is of prime importance. Local and foreign entrepreneurs may feel encouraged to invest in this sector.
Taking up of a mega plan for renovating the monuments had been discussed during the rules of successive governments but those are yet to see the light of day. It is imperative for the government to take up a massive plan for reconstruction and renovation of the historical buildings and monuments. There is no alternative to preserving our heritage sites.
