“Double 11” is an annual shopping extravaganza first launched by Chinese e-retailers. At a press conference regarding Tmall’s annual shopping carnival, Alibaba Rural Taobao praised red rice grown in Yuanyang County, southeast Yunnan’s Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture before more than 500 media from across the country and the world.
On October 13, Honghe Prefecture and Alibaba Rural Taobao jointly unveiled their “1+1,000” e-commerce precision poverty alleviation project in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province. On the same day, the official flagship store selling Yuanyang red rice officially opened at Tmall.com, becoming the first online flagship store featuring red rice grown only in Yunnan province. Yuanyang red rice has not only travelled out of the rural mountains to become popular online, but has also become a means of precision poverty alleviation for the province.
“1+1,000” refers to one industrial base and 1,000 poor farmers. At the local level, a farm established by Rural Taobao has standardized the planting of red rice. This covers ever aspect of cultivation, from sowing, fertilizing, irrigation, harvesting, to the storage, shipping logistics, sales and integrated big-data feedback. At the planting area for Yuanyang red rice, Rural Taobao and Yuanyang County will select 1,000 poor growers and provide them with rice-planting certificates. Rural Taobao will sell all red rice meeting its standards and lift 1,000 farmers out of poverty.
Yuanyang red rice, known as the oldest rice species, is grown at the Honghe Hani terraces in southern Yunnan. Due to logistical difficulties, it was once hard for red rice and other local produce to be transported out of the mountains. The “1+1,000” e-commerce precision poverty alleviation project addresses these concerns, and is the first project of its kind in China.
