Internal feud in Khulna city AL

Gazi Moniruzzaman, Khulna

A kind of organisational disorder is prevailing in the grassroots level of the ruling party Awami League in Khulna due to intra-party feud.
Authoritarian behaviour of some of the high ranking leaders has also turned problematic for running the party in different levels.
Conflicting relations between Khulna city AL president and general secretary have spillover impacts on the rank and file, keeping them almost away from active politics, party insiders remarked. Although nine months are going to pass by since after holding of the council of AL Khulna city unit, it is yet to get a full-fledged committee, finding itself in a complete mess.  The grassroots leaders and activists of the party have also expressed utter disappointment at such situation.
The triennial council of AL Khulna city unit was held on the Khulna Circuit House premises on November 29, 2014.
Former mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and lawmaker of Bagerhat-3 (Rampal-Mongla) constituency Talukder Abdul Khaleque was re-elected president at the council while lawmaker of Khulna sadar constituency and convener of 14-party alliance Khulna city unit Mizanur Rahman Mizan was re-elected general secretary through negotiation.  AL central leaders who attended the council asked the newly elected president and general secretary to form a full-fledged committee at the earliest.
Since after the directive, no list of 71-member full-fledged Khulna city committee was sent in the last eight months to Dhaka for approval of the party high command due to infighting between the president and general secretary, according to insiders of the party.  As a result, there is no possibility of reforming the city committee in near future, alleged a vice-president preferring anonymity.
On the other hand, councils of five thana units (Sonadanga, Khalishpur, Daulatpur and Khanjahan Ali) of the city AL were held in June and July last year (2014) while council of Sadar thana unit AL was held in September last year.
All the five thana units have president and general secretary.   But no thana unit has yet formed  their full-fledged committee as the leaders of all thana units are divided into city unit led by president Talukder Abdul Khaleque and general secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan.
Sources said both Sadar thana unit AL president Advocate Saiful Islam and general secretary Fakir Md Saiful are supporters of TA Khaleque.
Sonadanga thana AL president Bulu Biswas is supporter of Mizan but general secretary Taslim Ahmed Asha is the follower of Khaleque, Khalishpur thana unit president Sanaullah Nannu and Monirul Islam Bashar are supporters of former State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian MP, Daulatpur thana AL president Sheikh Syed Ali is follower of Monnujan but general secretary Shahidul Bando is supporter of Mizan.
Khanjahan Ali thana AL president Abid Hossain and general secretary Anisur Rahman are Mizan’s supporters.
Party insiders said party factions have become desperate to retain their control over the Khulna city unit.  They alleged that these groups and sub-groups are bringing in hooligans to serve their purpose.  Taking advantage of this situation, local goons have started to infiltrate the party.
Their entry, in fact, has become easier, as both factions are trying to grab the full-fledged city unit using muscle power. The bleak scenario has, however, disappointed genuine party workers, and they now prefer to stay away from the party activities in the city. When contacted, Mizanur Rahman Mizan, general secretary of AL Khulna city unit said there might be difference of opinion in a major party like Awami League.  “But I don’t see existence of any grouping and I have no involvement in such a situation,” he said.  Mizan further claimed they will be able to send proposal for a full-fledged city committee to Dhaka by the last week of August this year for approval of the party high command.
Besides, Talukder Abdul Khaleque, president of AL Khulna city unit, denied existence of intra-party dispute in Khulna saying, “It is rather a competition for leadership which is not wrong in democracy.”
“I appreciate that many dedicated  and qualified people including  youngsters are willing to assume responsibility in the party. Such competition does not mean intra-party conflict,” he claimed.
