BNP yesterday alleged that the government is trying to control the law and order situation in the country through ‘gunfights’.
“The extrajudicial killings cannot be accepted,” said BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon while addressing a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters in the capital.
He apprehended that opposition leaders and activists might be killed in gunfights in the days ahead.
From the recent killings in gunfights and the statement of the road transport and bridges minister on those, it appears that that the gunfights are taking place at the instigation of the government, said Ripon, also the international affairs secretary of the BNP.
Criticising the government for suspending Gazipur Mayor MA Mannan, he said the government is destroying the local government system through its measures.
Through the suspension, the government disrespected the public representative, Ripon claimed.
He also insisted that the elected mayors and other representatives be reappointed to their own posts and demanded the release of detained party leaders and activists, including MK Anwar and journalist Shawkat Mahmud.
