For the first time, the country’s paramilitary force, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be conducting a joint exercise soon with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) in the Sundarbans area of West Bengal to enhance mutual trust between the two forces, sources in the home ministry and the BGB said. The proposed joint exercise would be conducted as per the decision taken at the DG-level talks between the two border forces held in Delhi from August 2-7. During the bilateral talks, the BSF authorities proposed to conduct a joint exercise to which the BGB Director General (DG), Major General Aziz Ahmed, agreed.
Major General Ahmed told The Independent that they have asked the BSF authorities to submit the modalities for the exercise. They will then decide whether to attend the exercise in the area or not. “I don’t know why the BSF proposed to conduct the exercise in the Sundarbans area of West Bengal. We may change the area for the proposed exercise, if necessary,” he said.
The chief of BGB claimed that the proposed exercise will help to enhance mutual trust and confidence building between the two border forces. He also informed that a ‘firing competition’ will be conducted between the two paramilitary forces soon.
“As part of confidence building measures between the BSF and the BGB, joint retreat ceremony, joint training and exchange of delegations to celebrate Raising Days, National Days and Passing Out parades would be conducted regularly,” he added. At present, the two borders forces operate under the Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) with a shared view to prevent cross-border criminal activities, irregular movement and prevent incidents of violence and tragic loss of lives. The forces of the two countries have already conducted coordinated patrolling in their respective territories to stop cross border crimes. Bangladesh and India share a 4,096-km long border, making it the fifth longest land border in the world. It includes 262 km in Assam, 856 km in Tripura, 180 km in Mizoram, 443 km in Meghalaya and 2,217 km in West Bengal.
Sources said the vulnerable border points lie in 33 border districts, including 10 coastal ones in Bangladesh. More than 50 categories of Bangladeshi goods are smuggled daily to India.
