Ex-BM College principal jailed in graft case

A court in Barisal on Wednesday sentenced a former principal of Barisal Government Brojo Mohun College and a former general secretary of the college’s student union different jail terms in a graft case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Among the two, Nurul Anwar, former principal of the college, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.  Penalised under two separate sections of the ACC Act, he was also fined Tk4 lakh, in default to suffer one year more in jail. On other hand, Abu Zafar Shikdar, former JCD leader and general secretary of B M College Students Union, was awarded two years’ imprisonment and fined Tk one lakh or in default to suffer jail of six months more.
Dilip Kumar Bhoumik, judge of the Divisional Special Judge’s Court, announced the verdict in presence of the accused after examining six out of 11 witnesses and other evidence.
Court sources said Tk two lakh had been collected through two bank cheques against repair work of the student union building on September 10 and October 5 of 2002.
Abul Hasan, assistant director of ACC, after receiving allegation about anomaly in the work, conducted investigation into the case in this connection and found that there had been done works worth only Tk 12,151 while the rest Tk 1,78,899 was misappropriated.  Then he lodged a case with Barisal Kotwali police station on March 31, 2009. Wazed Ali Gazi, assistant director of ACC, Barisal office, after investigating the case submitted charge sheet to the court on December 23, 2012.
