A Window of Quality Higher Education in Bangladesh

Considering the insufficient public universities and demand for higher education in the country, the government took decision to establish universities in the private sector and regarding this, the first private university launched its operation in 1992 under the Private University Act, 1992 with the supervision of University Grants Commission (UGC) as its regulatory body.

Subsequently, Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) was set up in 2002 with the slogan ‘Knowledge for Innovation and Change’. The university launched functions comprising the latest courses in its academic disciplines focusing both national and global issues to face the prevailing challenges of the country’s education sector in the 21st century. With some limitations, private universities are playing a very vital role in this sector by making higher education attainable by the country’s mass people.

Though the private university’s education is pricey to some extent, it is not too much bearing in mind the less time span and other facilities offered by them.

NUB offers 17 courses under 10 departments of five faculties. The university operates under a team work among the students, teachers and administrative staff for maintaining the global standard of education.

NUB students take part in many co-curricular activities i.e. seminar, career counseling workshop, symposium, IT fair, study tour, Mathematics Olympiad, International Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition, software development competition, inter-university football and cricket tournaments in parallel to their curriculum.

A total of 313 meritorious teachers, most of them are full-timers, graduated from different renowned universities like BUET, University of Dhaka and foreign universities, have been employed by the university (NUB). Besides, many experienced professors, retired from the prominent public universities, have also been appointed as full-time teachers in the different departments of NUB. There has always been a cordial relationship between the students and teachers. The university has sufficient digital classrooms, computer labs and laboratory rooms to provide quality education for students in different disciplines. A student can never think of adopting unfair means in the examinations as they are strictly prohibited from the very beginning of the university in this connection. In addition, it has employed 266 administrative staff to help teachers and students as well.

NUB libraries and computer labs are very rich in sufficient collections. The university has got six libraries including the departmental ones with a collection of more than 130,000 books including dictionaries, reference and text books. It has also a collection of newspapers, periodicals and journals in its every library. The library services are open to all students every day even on holidays.

It has 18 modern laboratories with sufficient number of computers provided with internet facilities, Wi-Fi systems etc. useful to both students and teachers.

At the present time, the most important thing – to be accomplished by a student – is a high level of competence in English. Accordingly, each student of NUB is given special care so that she/he can have a good command of English.

Department of Law and Business Administration
The Department of Law and the Department of Business Administration here are better than that of many other public and private universities in the country. NUB has been at the top of the list in the ‘Bar Council Vocational Examination’ for the last six years. The ‘Moot Team’ of the university has so far become champion (competing with all the private and public universities including the University of Dhaka) for three times in the ‘International Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition’. Every year a good number of LLB graduates become Assistant Judges after passing the Bangladesh Judicial Service Examination. Since its inception, a total of nearly 5,000 students are working for different financial institutions at home and abroad after passing from the Business School of NUB.

Permanent Campus
According to the condition of government, the construction work of NUB permanent campus is going on well in full-swing at Ashkona (near Haji Camp) in the capital, Dhaka. The university authority hopes that it would be possible to move two or three departments to the permanent campus before the upcoming Fall-2015 semester.

Research agreement with UGC
The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has been conducting various programmes for the last two years to improve the standard of education in the country’s public and private universities. Regarding this, being satisfied with NUB’s academic performance, the UGC has recently signed an agreement with NUB to provide ‘Research Fund’ for the university to roll its standard of education towards the apex level.

Largest Convocation
NUB staged its largest convocation on April 26, 2015 with the honourable President and NUB Chancellor Md. Abdul Hamid as the chief guest. Degrees were conferred among around 5,000 students in the historic largest convocation of the country.

A placement centre has recently been formed at NUB for the job seekers of the country. Students can acquire training and job information from this centre both at the beginning and after the completion of their studies.

Regarding the university, Professor Dr. Abu Yousuf Mohammad Abdullah, Chairman of NUB Trust, said, “I believe that we will not be able to become a developed and self-sufficient nation without an educated and skilled manpower. Hence, we have been using our best efforts here at NUB to generate an intellectual and capable manpower that will lead our country towards glory and prosperity.”

Prof. Dr. Anwarul Karim, Pro-Vice Chancellor of NUB said, “We are spending about 60 per cent of our total expenditure for supplying modern educational equipment, while the public universities spend about 75 per cent of their total expenses only on administrative activities. We have made research works compulsory for our teachers and encourage them in going abroad for attaining higher studies. In addition, since we have succeeded in having a number of scholarly teachers, the number of enrolled students has reached 22,000 within a few years.”
