Mimia earns double gold on opening day

Mimia Akhter of Kushtia stole the opening day’s show when she earned double gold medals in the National Age Group Women’s Swimming Championship at Sultana Kamal Women Sports Complex swimming pool yesterday.  Mimia started her campaign with winning first gold medal of the meet in  100-metre backstroke of 13-14 years group. Rokeya Parveen of Jhenidah bagged the silver, while Nahida of Madaripur won the bronze medal.

Then she added her second goal in 100-metre butterfly. Tania Akhter of Jhenidah got the silver and Irani Khatun of Kushtia grabbed the bronze.

Irfana Khatun of Munshiganj lifted the gold in 100-metre breaststroke in the same age group. Suriya Akhter of Jessore earned the silver, while Sathi Khatun of Kushtia finished third.

On the other hand Tania Khatun of Jhenidah became the best all-round swimmer in the above mentioned group winning the 200-metre individual medley. Irfana Khatun of Munshiganj followed her in second position and Suriya Akhter of Jessore became third.

A total of eight events were held on the opening day of the two day meet being held under the auspices of Bangladesh Women Sports Federation (BWSF). Awami League youth and sports secretary Harunur Rashid inaugurated the championship as chief guest. Bangladesh swimming Federation general secretary MB Saif was present as special guest. BWSF senior vice-president Anjuman Ara Aksir presided over the opening ceremony.

Tajmira bagged the third gold for Kushtia as she became first in 100-metre freestyle in 11-12 years age group. Hosne Ara Akhter of  Jessore got the silver and her teammate Fatema Khatun Lisa grabbed the bronze. Arzina Khatun of Pabna clinched gold in 100-metre backstroke, while Hosne Ara Akhter of Jessore also earned a silver in the event. The bronze medal went to  Sharmila Khatun of Dhaka.

A little Poly Khatun of Jhenidah became the fastest swimmer when she ran away with the 50-metre freestyle gold in the 8-10 years age group. Saptami of Madaripur earned the silver and Samia Akhter Sharmi of Kishoreganj pocketed the bronze.

The same three also showed their supremacy in the 50-metre breaststroke with Saptami clinching the gold, Samia earned silver and Poly finished third.
