Chinese firms urged to invest more in EPZs

STAFF REPORTER

Maj Gen Mohd Habibur Rahman Khan, ndc, psc, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), has requested Chinese entrepreneurs to invest more in the EPZs of Bangladesh.

He made this appeal during a meeting with a 20-member delegation of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Light Industrial Products and Arts Crafts at the BEPZA executive chairman’s office in Dhaka.

The delegates of the biggest light industrial organisation in China, led by its vice-president, Zhang Jie, visited the BEPZA Complex Thursday, and  showed keen interest in investing in the EPZs.

The BEPZA executive chairman said the EPZs of Bangladesh are the best places to invest.

But owing to scarcity of land, it is not possible to accommodate large-scale investment at the EPZ located in Dhaka and Chittagong regions, he added.

He urged the delegates to invest in Uttara, Mongla and Ishwardi EPZs as these are ideal places to set up light industrial products and arts crafts like ornaments, houseware, camping item, bags, luggage, wigs, stationary products etc.

He informed the delegation that presently 94 Chinese enterprises are operating in the country’s EPZs and have invested around USD 816 million. Over

110,000 people are working in these enterprises.

Ahsan Kabir, general manager (investment promotion), highlighted the overall scenario of the BEPZA through a PowerPoint presentation. He said an industry-friendly peaceful investment climate is the main attraction of the EPZs.

The key strength of these EPZs is an amicable cohesive teamwork and harmonious relations among workers, management, and owners, he added.

Kabir also spoke about facilities and incentives offered by the BEPZA and answered various queries.
