AL programme at Suhrawardy Udyan today

Not a counter to BNP rally: Quader

STAFF REPORTER

The Awami League (AL) has made all arrangements to hold its mega citizen’s rally at the city’s historic Suhrawardy Udyan today. The pro-AL citizen’s platform is organising the rally to celebrate the recognition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic March 7 speech as a world documentary heritage by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) on October 31. The rally will be held from 2.30 pm onwards. AL president Sheikh Hasina will attend it as the chief guest. Dhaka University Emeritus Professor Dr Anisuzzaman will preside over the rally. To make the rally a grand success, the ruling party has held several preparatory meetings and directed its leaders and workers of different associate bodies to join it spontaneously.

AL insiders said the party high-ups have also directed the leaders and workers of the districts close to Dhaka to attend the meeting on time and ensure huge participation. The idea is to send a message to the nation ahead of the upcoming municipal and national polls that the people are with the AL.

Last Sunday, AL’s arch-rival, BNP, held a public rally to mark 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day' at Suhrawardy Udyan, where party chairperson Khaleda Zia stated her

party’s demand for holding the next general election under a non-party neutral government.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader has already rejected Khaleda’s demand. However, Sheikh Hasina will apparently reply to Khaleda’s demand officially.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, yesterday visited Suhrawardy Udyan to check the preparations for the rally. The rally will not be a counter-programme to beat the BNP as eminent citizens have organised it, he claimed.

“It is not purely a political programme. If anyone smells divisive politics here, that won’t be fair,” he told the media. “The AL will not hold any rally to counter the BNP’s programme. Saturday’s rally is to celebrate the recognition of Bangabandhu’s March 7 speech by UNESCO,” he insisted.

Housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain, AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, state minister for textiles and jute Mirza Azam, AL organising secretary AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and cultural affairs secretary Ashim Kumer Ukil, among others, accompanied Quader on the visit.

On Wednesday, the AL central committee organised a meeting at the party president’s Dhanmondi office to discuss ways to make the rally a success. AL lawmakers from Dhaka and leaders of affiliated organizations attended the meeting. At the meeting, Quader directed all leaders and lawmakers to gather a huge number of people at the rally. A meeting was also held at Prime Minister’s political adviser HT Imam’s house on Monday, while the Dhaka City South unit of AL held another meeting last week to come up with ideas to make the rally a grand success.
