Russel earn full marks with late goal

Defender Uttam Kumar Banik struck a late goal, as Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra made a winning start in the second leg of the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League football defeating Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra by 1-0 yesterday.

Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, in the day’s first match Russel demonstrating better performances but had to survive with a solitary goal victory.        

Sheikh Russel, who won the treble in 2012-13 with lifting the Independence Cup and finished the season winning the league trophy, since that could not shine, as last few seasons they were almost out of championship fight.

Specially, they spent the struggling time in the previous season when they finished on eighth position with managing only six win while suffered seven defeats out of 22 matches, the worst ever, their Premier League history.

This season, dreaming to give championship fight they formed the team and also started the campaign in style with thrashing Muktijoddha KC by 3-0 to indicate as one of the title contenders but failed to keep up the momentum and finished the first leg on sixth position with managing four wins, as many draws and suffered three defeats.

However, on the day, the All Blues, who played with a bit different colour jersey, despite playing full authority against Muktijoddha, suffered from poor efforts of forward line, as they had to wait for a goal for a long 69 minutes and had to leave the ground with a solitary goal win.

After a long struggle Russel finally broke the deadlock to have the coveted goal on 69th minute and Monem Khan Raju again paved the way when he crossed the ball inside the area and defender Uttam Kumar Banik’s eye catching back-header went into the far post (1-0).
