5 get life for killing housewife

Brahmanbaria: A court has convicted five people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment for killing a housewife at Bidyakut village in Nabinagar upazila in 2009, reports UNB.

The convicts are—Rafiqul Islam, husband of the victim and a resident of Bidyakut village, his four associates Shamim Ahmed, Aktar Hossain, Choto Aktar Hossain and Arash Doctor. Additional District and Sessions Judge M Moin Uddin passed the verdict on Tuesday.

According to the prosecution, Rafiqul hired the four others to kill her wife Fatu Begum Simu prompted by his second wife. As per the plan, Shamim, Aktar, Choto Aktar and Arash Doctor killed Simu while she was returning from her father’s house along with Rafiqul on July 10, 2009.

Following the incident, Rafiqul’s father Abul Hossain filed a murder case.

Couple burnt in Manikganj gas cylinder blast

Manikganj: A couple was injured as a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a house in Gangadhar Patti area of the district town on early yesterday, reports UNB.

A gas cylinder at the kitchen of the house went off when Sabina Yesmin, wife of Hamidur Rahman, tried to ignite the gas burner and caught fire around 4.30 am, leaving the couple burnt severely.

The injured—Sabina Yesmin with 70 percent burns and Hamidur with 40 percent burns—were firstly taken to District Sadar Hospital and later shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, said sadar hospital residential medical officer Lutfar Rahman.

Woman killed in road accident

A woman was killed and seventeen injured in a road accident on Rangamati-Chittagong highway in Manikchari Bridge area of Rangamati district yesterday.

The deceased was Tapui Begum, 25, wife of Md Solaiman, a resident of Athuradepu in Chittagong town.

Officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station Satyajit Barua told The Independent that the accident occurred as the driver of a Chittagang bound passenger bus lost control over the steering.

Police with the help of locals sent the injured to Rangamati Sadar Hospital for treatment.

2 held with 2,400 yaba tablets

Police arrested two alleged drug traders and recovered 2,400 pieces of contraband yaba tablets from their possession from Sakhipur Filling Station in Tangail yesterday.

The arrestees are Farook Hossain, 45, of Sakhipur Southpara in Sakhipur Upazila and Nazrul Islam, 47, of Naikanbari in Basail upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Tangail (North) DB police Md Nazmul Hoque Bhuyan said on information, police raided a tea stall of the filling station in the morning and arrested the two drug traders. After searching their bodies police recovered 2,400 pieces of yaba tablets. The arrestees are involved with drug trading for a long time, the OC added.

120 landless families get land

DINAJPUR: At least 120 landless families of Sundorpur village under Kaharole upazila of the district got land from the government today under its Second Cluster Village Project, reports BSS.

State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury handed over the documents of the land to the landless families at a simple function held at the village as the chief guest.

Each of the families got 6 decimal of land and a constructed house under the project.

Deputy Commissioner Mir Khairul Alam presided over the function. Local Lawmaker Monoranjan Shil Gopal, project director Mahabubul Alam and Kaharole upazila chairman Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury were present, among others.
