BSS

The Nazrul Institute Bill, 2017 was placed yesterday in the Jatiya Sangsad aimed at collecting literary and cultural works of Poet Nazrul Islam, its preservation and ensuring proper campaign at all levels, reports BSS.

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor placed the bill in the House yesterday evening with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair. With a view to giving a modern and time-befitting look, the new bill was made annulling the Nazrul Institute Ordinance, 1984, the minister told the Sangsad describing the object of the proposed bill.

Earlier, on February 23 in 2013, the cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, laid emphasis on annulling and amending the ordinance which was promulgated during a military regime.

Referring to the functions of the Institute, the new bill said it would be responsible for promoting the study of poet’s works, collecting and compiling his songs, and preserving and publishing those.

The institute will make necessary arrangement for research and publication of the Nazrul’s literature, organise conferences, lectures, debates and seminars on matters relating to contributions of the poet on music, literature and in other fields, and also set up library of books, records, tapes and other preservative ensemble relating to Nazrul works, the object of the bill added. According to the bill, there will be a head office of the institute in Dhaka to run it and the authorities concerned would be able to set up its branch office wherever it is necessary as per the permission of the government.

The overall activities of the institute will be governed by a board which will be accountable to the government in all aspects.
