29 villages brought under power network

CHANDPUR: About 29 villages of Matlab Uttar upazila in the district have been brought under rural electrification network by Chandpur Palli Bidyut Samity-2 (CPBS), reports BSS.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya formally inaugurated the electrification programme recently at a simple function in Mohonpur area of the upazila as the chief guest.

About 3663 families of 29 villages got the new electric line of the upazila, said Abu Taher, General Manager of CPBS.

A total of 40.3 kilometers areas have been brought under rural electrification network spending about Taka 7.75 crore, he said.

Man held with arms, ammo

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested an alleged arms trader along with six foreign pistols, 18 rounds of bullets and four magazines from Chalkpara border area in Shibganj upazila of the district in the early hours of yesterday.

The arrested was identified as Moznu Mia, 55, a resident of Namuchalkpara village of the upazila.

Lt Cl Md Rashed Ali, commanding officer of BGB-59 battalion, said at a press briefing that on secret information, a team of BGB raided the house of Moznu around 1:30 am and arrested him with six foreign pistols, 18 rounds of bullets and four magazines, while another arms trader fled away. The arrested person was handover to Shibganj police station, BGB said.

Road crash kills 1 in Jessore

A day labourer was killed in a road accident in Mandartala area on Jessore-Magura road of Sadar upazila on Sunday evening.

The deceased was identified as Jamal Hossain, 55, son of Mansur Ali, a resident of Bahadurpur Mandartala village of the upazila. Rohima Begum, wife of the victim, said the accident took place in the area when motorcycle hit Jamal while he was returning home, leaving him critically injured.

Local people rescued him and sent him to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Seeds, fertilizers distributed among farmers in Bhola

BHOLA: Seeds of various Robi crops and fertilizers were distributed among 2000 farmers in Sadar upazila under incentives programme of the government, reports BSS.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said to assist the small and marginal farmers, the government took the incentive programems to distribute seed of different Robi crops and fertilizers during the current Robi season.

Under the programme, the farmers got seeds of mustard, maize, wheat, ground nut and mungbean and dafertlilizers Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MoP).

Sadar UNO M Mujahidul Islam presided over the function. It was addressed, among others, by deputy director of DAE Prosanto Kumar Saha, vice-chairman of the upazila parishad m Yunus Haji and agriculture officer M Riaj Uddin.

38 arrested in Satkhira

SATKHIRA: Police arrested 38 persons on various charges from eight upazilas of the district in the last 12-hour ending at around 8am, reports BSS.

Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.

During the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 16 persons, Kalaroa police arrested five persons, Tala police Thana police arrested three persons, Kaliganj police arrested two persons, Shyamnagar police arrested five persons, Assasuni police arrested three persons, Patkelghata Thana police arrested one person and Debhata police arrested three persons.

Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.
