Clash over fishing canal

Five killed, 50 hurt in Kishoreganj

At least five people were killed, including three siblings, and 50 others injured in a clash between people of two villages over control of a fishing canal in Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj district yesterday. The deceased were identified as three brothers, Fordis Mia, 55, Makhon Mia 42, and Masum Mia, 35, sons of Md Abdul Aziz of Poshchim Hati village, supporters of Pallab Mia group, and Rajib Mia, 28, and Makbul Mia, 30, of Charigram village belonging to Maruf Mia’s group.

According to police and local sources, there was a long standing dispute between Poshchim Hati’s Pallab Mia group and Taguria Parar’s Maruf Mia group over establishing control on a fishing canal. The two groups had earlier engaged in several clashes that led to filing of cases and counter cases with the local police.

Yesterday at around 12:30 pm, the two rival groups equipped with homemade sharp weapons got engaged in a clash in Charigram village. Four people got killed during the clash while one other died while being taken to a hospital. At least fifty others were injured, including three in critical condition.

Rifaqul Islam, 25, Tufazzal Islam, 38 and Kalam Mia, 48 were rushed to Kishoreganj  Sadar Hospital as their condition was deemed critical while 20 of the injured were sent to Mithamoin Health Complex and the rest were given first aid, said sources. Md Majibur Rahman, Chairman of Dhaki Union, said the clash broke out over establishing supremacy on a fishing canal that he tried to mitigate several times through local arbitrations, but failed.

Md. Alamgir Hossain, officer in-charge of Mithamoin Police Station, said the five bodies were sent to Kishoreganj Sadar General Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

Additional police were deployed in the area to avert any further clash. No case was filed and none was arrested over the incident till filing of this report yesterday evening.
