Closing of Lakehead Grammar School

HC seeks govt explanation

STAFF REPORTER

The High Court yesterday issued separate rules asking the government to explain by Sunday why its decision to stop the functions of three branches of Lakehead Grammar School in Dhaka should not be declared illegal. The HC also asked the government to explain as to why it should not be directed to allow the owner of the school to resume the operations of the school immediately.

The HC bench also asked the government to explain why it should not be directed to allow Lakehead Grammar School to impart education to its students and continue all its academic activities without any hindrance.

In response to two separate writ petitions, the HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan issued the rules and fixed at 11.30am on next Sunday for hearing.

A total of five officials of the government including secretaries of home and education and deputy commissioner of Dhaka have been made respondents to reply to the rule within Sunday.

Earlier in the day, two writ petitions were filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the government’s decision to stop the functions of three branches of Lakehead Grammar School in Dhaka on charges of allegedly patronizing religious extremism and militancy.

Proprietor of the school Khaled Hassan Matin and guardians of 12 students submitted the petitions praying to the High Court to stay the government decision.

In the petitions, they said the educational activities of the school have been hampered due to the government decision and therefore the education of the students has become uncertain.

On Monday, the education ministry ordered the Dhaka district administration to close down the activities of the branches of the Lakehead Grammar School at Dhanmondi and Gulshan.

The next day, a police team led by a magistrate closed down the schools branches in Dhanmondi and Gulshan on charges of allegedly patronizing religious extremism and militancy.

Barrister Akhtar Imam and former Attorney General Hassan Areif appeared for the petitioners while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state during the hearing.
