Militancy won’t exist in Bangladesh: IGP

BSS

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque yesterday said militancy would not exist in the country as the people of Bangladesh are basically religious but not orthodox, reports BSS. ‘Now militants are not strong. It is our achievement that we have broken their potency and I believe that they do not possess further strength to create any big incident,’ he said while speaking at an anti-militancy meeting after inaugurating the newly constructed four-storied building of Shibganj thana at Shibganj stadium in Chapainawabganj district on Thursday.

The meeting was presided over by the superintendent of police of Chapainawabganj TM Mojahidul Islam. Among others, lawmaker of Shibganj constituency Md. Golam Rabbani, secretary of the ministry of Social Welfare Md. Zillar Rahman, deputy inspector general of police of Rajshahi range M Khurshid Hossain, former state minister Brigadier (Rtd) Mohammad Enamul Hoque, deputy commissioner of Chapainawabganj Md. Mahmudul Hasan, chairman of Chapainawabganj Zila Parishad Md. Moinuddin Mondal, superintendent of police of Mymensingh Syed Nurul Islam and convener of Chapainawabganj District Community Policing Forum Md. Ruhul Amin spoke as special guests on the occasion.

Shahidul Hoque said the gap between people and police must be minimized and there should be a bridge between the two communities. He added that community policing forum was formed to empower people and to make police accountable to the people.

“A section of people have been misleading others by misinterpretation of our religion and helping them getting involved in militant activities,” he further added.

He stressed on proactive activities by both police and people so that any bad incident can be checked before it occurs. The anti-liberation forces targeted police and killed them to break their mental strength, however they failed as the police community has been enlightened by the ideals of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the IGP added.

He also asked the Imams of the mosques and madrasha teachers to come forward to preach the values and teachings of Islam against militancy, terrorism and drug.
