Frequent visits by judges to Bangabhaban not a good sign: SCBA

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president, Joynul Abedin, alleged yesterday (Wednesday) that recently judges of the Supreme Court (SC) have been visiting Bangabhaban frequently, which is not a good sign for the judiciary.

“It is not good sign for the judges to go to Bangababhan frequently. Why is the President inviting apex court judges repeatedly? It had happened during the caretaker government rule,” he said.

The SCBA president made the remarks at a press briefing held at the Supreme Court auditorium.

He also alleged that recently the law minister is coming to the Supreme Court and holding meetings with apex court judges, which is also not a good sign. He further said apex court judges would violate their oath, if they do not seat with Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.

“If the Chief Justice returns from abroad and wants to conduct judicial function, apex court judges should seat with him as they are oath-bound to conduct judicial functions with the Chief Justice. If they decline to seat with him, it would be tantamount to breach of oath,” he added.

The SCBA organised the press briefing in protest against the attorney general’s recent comments that the Chief Justice would commit contempt of court if he sat with apex court judges to conduct judicial functions. In a written statement, Joynul Abedin alleged that the attorney general’s comments regarding the Chief Justice is tantamount to contempt of court.

“The Chief Justice is not ill. The verdict in the 16th amendment case has made him sick. Had he (Chief Justice) not delivered the verdict, he would not have been sick. We think that Surendra Kumar Sinha will remain the Chief Justice of the country until his retirement or resignation,” he said.
