NSU teacher ‘missing’

Mubashar Hasan, an assistant professor at North South University’s political science and sociology department, has been missing since Tuesday afternoon, according to his family.

Motahar Hossain, father of Mubashar, has filed a general dairy (GD) in this regard with Khilgaon police station in the city.

“We've received the complaint and are now investigating it,” said Md Mashiur, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon police station.

Mubashar's uncle, Monzur Hossain, who is a researcher  at the BIDS, told The Independent that his nephew left his Banshree house on Tuesday morning to go to the university. The last time he contacted his father was at 4pm that day.

Mubashar has been working to counter violent extremism for a long time. He was the founder and CEO of an online portal named Alochonaa.com (Dialogue). He completed his PhD from Griffith University in Australia. He did his graduation from Dhaka University on mass communication and journalism.

Recently, Mubashar was involved in a research work on militancy in society. He was worried about his own security and had installed CCTV cameras in his home for the sake of safety, said his uncle.

Before leaving home, Mubashar informed his family members that he would be joining a meeting with UNDP officials in the evening and return home after that. But his mobile was switched off since 4:00pm, family sources said.

According to the general dairy, Mubashar went out of his house on Tuesday afternoon and his mobile was found switched off since then. Efforts to contact him have failed so far.

The public relations officer of North South University said that Mubashar came to the University on Tuesday and worked as usual.

His colleagues said his mobile was switched off from the afternoon, and they did not know the reason behind his going missing.

Earlier, journalist Utpal Das, 29, who works for the online portal Purboposhchimbd.news and covers the ruling Awami League, went missing on October 10. His father, Chitta Ranjan Das, and the editor of the portal filed two general diaries with Motijheel police station on October 12 and 13, respectively, in connection with the incident. But Utpal Das is yet to be traced.
