One day, our children will be leaders of the future generation. So, our society has a lot of responsibility towards them. Giving them the light of education and ensuring their fundamental rights are our responsibilities. But sadly, in our society some children get benefits, while others are left out in the cold.
Statistics show that there are more than 1.2 million street children in Bangladesh. Many of these children do not get the opportunity to go to school. According to the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, each child is entitled to special care and support. But how many underprivileged children in this country get that?
Every child has some dreams. A common dream of a school-going child is wearing a new school dress. But due to lack of money, many schoolchildren of our country cannot afford even that. Swapnotthan, a voluntary organisation of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), is trying to turn their dream into reality.
On October 21, Swapnotthan volunteers distributed new school uniforms among 71 underprivileged students of Haji Abdul Kadir Government School at Lilapara in Sylhet.
Rashed Talukder, chief adviser of Swapnotthan and director of student counselling and guidance at SUST, who was chief guest at the event, said Swapnotthan has always been doing work that is commendable. He urged other university students to come forward in a similar way.
Abdul Kadir, an educationist and founder of the school, said Swapnotthan is assisting the poor students of the area which is really praiseworthy.
Al Faisal, president of Swapnotthan, announced completion of its ‘Swapno Sajai School Dress-e’ uniform distribution programme which started in July.
Mahedi Kabir, general secretary of the organisation, said education is a fundamental right, but there are many underprivileged students in society who are largely deprived. The school dress distribution initiative is one of the few steps to overcome that.
Mohammad Roman Mia, assistant education officer of Sylhet district, Ataur Rahman, vice president of Swapnotthan, and Mahmudur Rahman, a businessman, were also present at the event.
Swapnotthan is working for the benefit of underprivileged and neglected children. Besides, free blood donation and assistance to impoverished people are also part of its regular programmes. n
